Duke University and NCCU recognized as 2017 Best Colleges

Duke University and NCCU were recognized by The U.S. News & World Report in the 2017 Best Colleges listings. Duke University was ranked at No. 8 in the National Universities top 50 category. N.C. Central University, the only school in the immediate Triangle area to make the Regional Universities list, came in at No. 72 and also landed on the report’s list of Historically Black Colleges and Universities coming in at No.13.

Durham recognized as No. 3 top city with the most access to quality healthcare

U.S. News & World Report named 10 metro areas offering the greatest access to healthcare, determined by the number of highly ranked hospitals within a 250-mile radius of each city. Durham was recognized as the No. 3 city noting the academic hospitals like University of North Carolina Health Care and Duke University Hospital. Duke also received the U.S. News' highest possible rating in nine procedures or conditions.

Durham recognized as a top 50 city to flip houses

Durham was recognized among Wallet Hub's top 50 cities to flip houses. The cities were compared across three key dimensions: house-flipping market potential, renovating and remodeling costs, and quality of life. Durham ranked No. 53 for house-flipping market potential rank, No. 69 for renovation and remodeling costs and No. 52 for quality of life and received a total score of 58.07.

Former Hillside High student wins hurdles title at World Junior Championship

Marcus Krah, a recent Hillside High graduate , won a world IAAF World U20 championship in the 110 meter hurdles in Bydgoszcz, Poland. He was also named The 2015/16 Gatorade State Boys Track & Field Athlete of the Year for demonstrating high academic achievement and exemplary personal character, including volunteerism, sportsmanship and community leadership.

NCCU recognized as HBCU of the Year

N.C. Central University has been honored as the 2016 HBCU of the Year by HBCU Digest during the annual awards contest recognizing achievement among the nation’s 111 historically black colleges and universities. NCCU’s Biomanufacturing Research Institute and Technology Enterprise, known as BRITE, also was named as the Best STEM Program, and the Campus Echo won in the category of Best Student Newspaper.The HBCU Digest Awards were presented in Washington, D.C., at the University of the District of Columbia. A panel of former and current HBCU presidents, alumni, faculty, students, journalists and former award winners served as judges.

Durham was recognized as the Nation’s 20th Bee City USA

Durham City Council unanimously passed a resolution to adopt the practices required to become a Bee City USA. Mayor William V. “Bill” Bell has designated the Durham Bee City Committee, a group of residents and business owners committed to protecting pollinators, as the facilitator for Durham’s efforts to meet the requirements of being a Bee City USA. Several key partners in the Durham Bee City Committee include Keep Durham Beautiful, Honeygirl Meadery, the NC Museum of Life and Science, Bee Downtown, Burt’s Bees, Durham County Cooperative Extension, Lee attracting birds and bees, Triangle Land Conservancy, and Durham County Bee Keepers.

Durham Distillery gins were recognized by two spirits competitions: the Beverage Testing Institute and the Fifty Best Awards. Both CONNIPTION Navy Strength and American Dry gins were awarded gold medals from Fifty Best, and CONNIPTION Navy Strength gin received an almost perfect score of 96 out of 100 from the Beverage Testing Institute.

Several Durham neighborhoods rank high on Rent Lingo's "Charm Index"

Apartment review and listing site RentLingo recently finished a "Charm Index" report on neighborhoods across the country. In Durham, the areas around Liberty and Mangum streets received 85 out of 100 possible points, and the neighborhoods of Central Park, Trinity Heights, and Parkwood were also mentioned as top Durham neighborhoods with charm.

Durham Distillery recognized at American Craft Spirits Association’s Distillers Convention

Durham Distillery was recognized with three medals at the American Craft Spirits Association’s Distillers Convention. The Conniption American Dry Gin won silver accolades while both the Damn Fine Coffee Liqueur (a partnership with Raleigh’s Slingshot Coffee Co.) and the Conniption Navy Strength Gin took the bronze.The organization is a nonprofit whose voting members must be licensed craft distillers.
