Scott Strickland, head groundskeeper for the Durham Bulls, was one of four groundskeepers honored with the Sports Turf Manager of the Year Award from the Sports Turf Managers Association.
Duke University's men's basketball team was ranked #1 in the Sports Illustrated College Basketball Preview issue and Nolan Smith was featured on the cover of the magazine.
Christian Laettner was honored for his great basketball career at Duke by being inducted into the College Basketball Hall of Fame.
Duke University senior Jared Dunnmon was awarded the prestigious Rhodes Scholarship. Dunnmon is pursuing alternative energy sources at Duke and is Duke's 43rd scholar to win the award.

The Durham County Tax Administration was awarded the “Joseph E. Hunt Distinguished Jurisdiction Award” presented by the North Carolina Association of Assessing Officers for its license plate recognition program for motor vehicle delinquent collection purposes.
The Duke University men's basketball team had three players selected to the 2010-11 Naismith preseason watch list released by The Atlanta Tipoff Club. Duke lead all schools with three players among the 50 chosen.

Victor J. Dzau, a physician, Duke University's chancellor for Health Affairs and James B. Duke Professor of Medicine, was honored with the American Heart Association's 2010 Research Achievement Award for work that advanced the field of cardiovascular research.

Durham resident and retired North Carolina School of Science and Math teacher Joe Liles will be featured on NBC's Today Show in a segment called "Your Life Calling with Jane Pauley" on Wednesday, November 10.
A poem written by Austen Grace Dellinger of Durham was published in the September/October edition of Clavier Companion, a national magazine for piano players and teachers. The poem was selected for the adult poetry section, even though Austen was 9 when she wrote it.
